 Jabez's Prayer List
C. Sumner Wemp

The real tragedy of life is not what people suffer but what they miss, what they could be and do for God and for their own good. Jabez, unknown and unheralded, asked for four big-time requests and "God granted him his requests," (1 Chronicles 4:10) and God is still doing it today for those who "keep on asking" as the parables in Luke chapters 11 and 18 teach.

We pray for Joe's toe and Jane's pains and that is fine, but why not add Jabez's major requests to our prayer list and see big things happen for God's glory and our good?

1) "Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed"
Jacob, who's name means "cheater," cheated Esau out of his birthright and blessing, ran for his life to his uncle Laban, and there reaped what he sowed. After 14 years in exile, he got his heart right and was coming back to make up with Esau. He was "left alone" (Genesis 32:24) and wrestled with the Angel and said, "I will not let you go except thou bless me." Was he ever blessed! He became Israel, "a prince with God" instead of Jacob, "cheater" and had power with God and man. If Jacob and Jabez were blessed for asking, so can you be if you will "keep on asking" (Luke 11:3). Thousands are seeing the blessing of God today when they "keep on asking."

2) "Enlarge my coast"
Each Israelite had a tract of land and the borders determined the boundaries of their influence and impact they could make. Those asking this today are seeing their ministries, their Sunday School, Bible classes, and youth groups grow and their impact increase significantly. My book on Pastoring was out of print, after praying this prayer for several months, I was told my book was going to be reprinted and given to 40,000 pastors. A missionary prayed this for five months and had six major openings for ministry come to him like he never had before. Pray this every day for your ministry. God still grants this request. Many, including me, have stated, "How I wish I had heard this years ago and prayed it every day."

3) "That your hand would be with me"
Ezra saw the king "grant him all his requests" (Ezra 7:6), he "came from Babylon to Jerusalem" (Ezra 7:9), he was "strengthened" (Ezra 7:28), he got "helpers" (Ezra 8:18), God "delivered us from the hand of our enemy" (Exodus 8:31), all because "the hand of God was upon us." Our country is in deep trouble. Many churches have folded up or are just hanging on. Tons of Christians have dried up and fallen away. We do not need more programs and methods, we desperately need to see the hand of God upon our pastors, churches and ministries. We don't need to see man's manipulations but a "demonstration of the Spirit and power" of God (1 Corinthians 2:4). D. L. Moody, Charles Finney, and many others had the hand of God upon them, preached the gospel, that Christ died for our sins and rose again and multitudes were broken before God and came to Christ and were saved. God is doing the same for many who ask daily for "the hand of God to be upon them." You pray this daily for your preaching, teaching and reaching the lost and see God do big-time things through you also.

4) "That thou wouldest keep me from evil"
With preachers and people falling like flies into sin, leaving the ministry and the Lord, it behooves us to pray this daily. Here is "a way to escape" (1 Corinthians 10:13), the temptations of the flesh and the devil so that "your prayers might not be hindered" (1 Peter 3:7).

Take charge of yourself like Joshua who said, "As for me" I am going to serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15). You are the only one you have to answer for. Write out a prayer list that includes these four requests and pray them every day. Ask for these for yourself, your family, your pastor and your church. When God begins to grant you these, you will be amazed! The whole world desperately needs you to pray this. Like Peter say, "At Thy word, I will" (Luke 5:5). Like Peter, you will reap the biggest harvest of your life and "forsake all and follow Jesus" (Luke 5:11).

We have made this beautiful framed plaque to remind you daily to ask these same requests. New Life Tracts will send you this plaque for a gift of $10.00 or more.

Why do you think you should go to heaven?
