Christ and the
Cults
I John 4:1-6; I Timothy 4:16; Matthew 7:15, 16a
"Ever learning, and never
able to come to the knowledge of the truth" (II Tim. 3:7) describes
the members of cult groups to a tee. There is no question that "some
shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and
doctrines of devils" (I Tim. 4: 1). God exhorts, "Believe not every
spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many
false prophets are gone out into the world" (I John 4:1). The way to
try the spirits is simply to measure all that they teach by the
standard of God's Word.
An astounding fact is that only 3 percent of Americans who claim any
religion belong to what is generally termed cults.* Many Christians
become greatly concerned to try to convert these when they are but a
drop in the bucket compared to the vast multitudes who are more
receptive and among whom there is a far greater yield. It has been
observed that most in the cults were at one time under the influence
of the major denominations and have turned from the truth and turned
to fables (II Tim. 4:4). We must neither neglect those in cults nor
spend a disproportionate amount of time with them. It is better to
teach the truth to prevent others from being deceived. Beware also of
glorying in a convert from a cult.
The best defense is a good offense. Many Christians are frustrated in
witnessing because those trained in the cults are quite aggressive and
keep Christians on the defensive. It is always best to present a
positive gospel. Keep off controversial questions that deteriorate
into arguments, for a Christian "must not strive" (II Tim. 2:24).
Avoid the peculiar doctrinal views and keep the cultist face to face
with his relation to Jesus Christ.
Some have come to our door denying there is a hell. I often ask them
if they know for sure that their sins are all forgiven and that they
are right with God that very moment, never mentioning hell. This
always stumps them, for they have no assurance. How easy then to share
my testimony and the gospel. Remember Christ loves those who are lost
in error. Be gracious.
